β³ Time traveller
Learning Objectives
Meet the time traveller
In this insight session, you will hear from an alumni who has been through the course and is now working in the tech industry. They will share their experience of training with CYF and how it has helped them in their career.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from their experience. If you could ask your future self anything about today, what would it be?
Facilitator tips
Put a call out on main Slack for alumni to volunteer to be a time traveller. They should be prepared to share their experience of the course and answer questions from the class. Please do this a couple of weeks beforehand to give them time to prepare.
π§ Sharing Our Blockers
Learning Objectives
We call problems that stop our progress “blockers”. We talk through our blockers regularly and help each other get “unblocked” or “unstuck”.
πΉοΈSharing Our Blockers
Join the Jam board or grab some sticky notes. Add your blockers.
Make sure to add only one blocker per note.
Once everyone has added their blockers, group similar blockers together.
Next, we will discuss the blockers and help each other get “unblocked”.
π§° Mentor Led Workshop
Learning Objectives
This time is to get help with a specific step. Focus on the blockers that are stopping your group from progressing. You must now split into groups based on the step you are working on. If you’re online, you can use breakout rooms to do this. If you’re in person, just step forward when your step is called.

GenAI Cover Letters
Step 1: GenAI Cover Letters
Learning Objectives
Discuss the goals of a cover letter. Come up with examples of things that should and shouldn’t be in a cover letter.
Discuss what makes for good and bad professional writing. Come up with examples of how to write well in a professional context, and things to avoid.
Look at someone’s example generated cover letter (or have ChatGPT generate one to use in the workshop) and reflect on it together.
How well does it achieve the goals of a cover letter? How professional is the writing? What things does it do badly? How does it make the applicant stand out compare to other generic letters?
Google Sheets
Step 2: Google Sheets
This is an introductory course on Google Sheets for adult learners. In Try a Career in Data Analytics, learners will analyze data like a data analyst by filtering, sorting, calculating averages, and creating a visualisation in Google Sheets.
Here is the lesson plan.
Web Development
Step 3, Step 4: Web Development
https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computer-programming/html-css
The Khan Academy course is an interactive video series where trainees build and deploy a sequence of static HTML and CSS sites.
Your job is to facilitate learners to work together on their projects. You can answer questions and unblock people, but keep your hands off the keyboard and let the applicants lead.
The capstone project is the Personal Home Page. This is much more self directed than the previous steps and supporting learners to explore HTML and CSS is really key here.
We encourage our learners to seek out code review. We ask learners to do this in Slack using a simple template. Volunteers should lead code review and make sure every learner receives at least one code review in Slack. This can be as few as 50 words.
When learners have completed the course, support them to give other learners on this step code review in Slack.
English
Step 5: English
Learning Objectives
People who cannot yet speak English at a B1 or higher level should not apply for the next course. This is because the course is taught in English.
Newcomers
Welcome to Code Your Future
Learning Objectives
Welcome to Code Your Future! We are excited to have you join our community. Here are the steps you need to take to get started:
π« Break
A quick break of fifteen minutes so we can all concentrate on the next piece of work.
π§° Peer learning Workshop
Learning Objectives
At CYF we always make time to help others. In fact, the best way to learn is to teach others. This is how we secure our understanding. Remember: focus on the blockers that are stopping your group from progressing. Volunteers may be around to help you with your questions, but this is your time to work together.

Wrap
You are done for the day. Take a moment to reflect on what you have learned and achieved.
Stand in a circle and share:
- π your name
- πͺπ½ one thing you built today
- π·πΎ the task you are going to work on next
- π one thing you need help with
Give yourselves a round of applause. Now you have earned your rest. Usually people go for a drink (or a coffee) after class. You are welcome to join and wind down together.
